Olympus’ previous rugged camera, the Mju 1050 SW, was received with little fanfare. This was partly because of its deviation in design from the usual Mju-SW series of shooters. However, it was more likely its lack of specifications that led consumers to continue hankering after its predecessor, the Mju 1030 SW.

What the Japanese company didn’t do right then, it got it spot-on this time with the new Mju TOUGH-8000. There is a change in naming convention because the company felt that SW was too limiting for its new shooters which fared beyond shockproof and waterproof. The Mju TOUGH-8000 is a vast improvement over the Mju 1050 SW, but compared with the Mju 1030 SW, the upgrades are only incremental.

This is a little compact 35mm Film Camera that you simply HAVE to look out for at car-boot sales, charity shops, garage sales and flea-markets.

The Olympus Mju 2 (II) or Stylus Epic as it is also known as, had a beautifully sharp and fast lens. It’s a fixed 35mm (no zoom) f/2.8. The camera is fully automatic, so all you’ve got to worry about is turning the flash off every time you open it up, then taking great photographs.

The Mju 2 / Stylus Epic looks very similar to inferior 35mm Compact Olympus cameras, so make sure you search hard and I’m sure you’ll find one.

This example cost me £5 at a car-boot sale – a real bargain.

It goes without saying that if any of these cameras become outdated (because their successor has since be released) it’s probably not a bad idea to check out the newest version of each camera listed. Again, these are just recommendations based on what I’ve personally used, or researched. As you can see, I’m also very partial to Canon, Panasonic and Sony – which for my money, produce the best video equipment available. But visit some of the above linked websites, NewEgg, B&H, and Amazon – coupled with any info from DPreview.com – and make your own conclusions and decisions.
